Dad hat: how to choose one based on your face shape

The dad hat is the easiest streetwear cap to wear: soft crown, slightly curved visor, adjustable closure. But "easy" doesn't mean "universal." Depending on your face shape, the same cap can elongate, round out, or balance your features. This guide explains how to make the right choice, without the jargon.

Dad hat, snapback, trucker: the differences in a minute

• Dad hat: unstructured crown (it sags a little), pre-curved visor, adjustable fabric or leather strap. Low profile, understated.
• Snapback: high, rigid crown, flat visor, plastic snap closure. A more imposing silhouette.
• Trucker: foam front, mesh back. Very breathable, but the crown sits higher.

The dad hat is the one that best follows the shape of the skull, which makes it easier to adapt to any face. This is also why it remains the default format for our cap collection.

Identifying your face shape

No tape measure needed. Pull your hair back, stand in front of a mirror, and look at three things: forehead width, cheekbone width, and jawline.

• Round: width and length are similar, soft jawline, no sharp angles.
• Oval: face is slightly longer than it is wide, balanced proportions.
• Square: wide, angular jawline, forehead of similar width.
• Long / rectangular: significantly longer than it is wide, high forehead.
• Heart: wide forehead, thin and pointed chin.

Which cap for which face shape

Round face

The goal is to add height and straight lines. Wear the cap sitting well on the upper forehead, without pushing it back: the visor creates a sharp horizontal line that breaks up the roundness. Avoid wearing it very far back, which exposes the entire face and visually widens it. A less curved visor works better than a very bent one.

Oval face

This is the most forgiving shape: dad hat, snapback, flat or curved visor—anything goes. The only real risk is choosing a crown that is too high, which will further elongate your silhouette. A low-profile dad hat remains the safest bet.

Square face

Here, we want to soften the angles. A noticeably curved visor, worn slightly to the side or a little further back, softens the jawline. Soft crowns are better than highly structured caps, which would double down on the face's geometry.

Long face

Avoid anything that adds height. Wear the cap low on the forehead, with the visor slightly tilted downward. A shallow crown and a wide visor provide balance. Avoid very high-profile models like structured snapbacks.

Heart-shaped face

The wide forehead is the area to balance. A cap worn straight, mid-forehead, visually reduces this width. Centered embroidery or patches draw the eyes toward the middle of the face rather than the temples.

Fit matters as much as shape

A poorly adjusted dad hat negates all the advice above. Three simple benchmarks:

1. Two fingers should be able to slide between the sweatband and your forehead. Any tighter and you'll get a mark; any looser and the cap will shift.
2. The visor should sit about a centimeter above your eyebrows. Too low, and it will overwhelm your eyes.
3. The excess strap should be tucked under the crown or trimmed clean if you never adjust the fit.

Embroidery or patch: how it changes the look

The type of decoration influences the look just as much as the cut. Embroidery directly into the fabric remains soft and follows the movement of the crown: this is the case with our "Spicy by Nature" embroidered cap, whose vintage-style pattern blends into the material. An applied patch, like on the leather patch baseball cap, conversely creates a sharp point of contrast on the front—useful if you want to focus attention, but less subtle if you are looking for something neutral.

Care: never put a cap in the washing machine

The drum will irreversibly deform the visor and the crown. The correct method:

• Spot clean with lukewarm water, a soft brush, and a little mild soap.
• Rinse with a sponge, without fully immersing the cap.
• Air dry, placed over a rounded object (an upside-down bowl works perfectly) to maintain its shape.
• Never use a tumble dryer or a radiator.

For the inner band, which absorbs sweat, regularly wiping it with a damp cloth is enough to prevent salt stains.

Three ways to wear it daily

• Straight and low: the most classic, works well with an oversized t-shirt and straight-leg jeans.
• Slightly back: exposes the forehead, lightens up a layered winter outfit.
• Backwards: reserved for long or oval faces, as it visually widens the top of the head.
